Frequently Asked Questions

Q. My Refrigeration runs off the main engine, so it must be a eutectic?
A. No, not necessarily, eutectic refers to the evaporator plate inside the fridge. If it is filled with a liquid solution that freezes as the system runs, it is a eutectic system and can be powered by either an off engine compressor or a mains powered electric unit. Some 12 volt dc systems are also eutectic systems.

Q. How often should the drier be changed?
A. The time frame for changing of the system drier depends on the state of the system. A moisture indicating sight glass is very helpful in this situation and will change colour as the system moisture increases. A sealed unit system that is leak free and has been piped with copper tube and well evacuated at time of installation could perform quite well for over 10 years without a drier change. However an open drive compressor using flexible hose may need a drier change in less than 1 year.

Q. Is a pre-trip check necessary?
A. Most breakdowns occur at the most inconvenient times and usually can be prevented with regular maintenance checks. When away from your home port, you are often at the mercy of unknown refrigeration service technicians who may do more harm than good. A pre-trip check could save you money and your sanity.
